Colour at Play shows you how to approach colour in your own life with a renewed sense of fun, play, and purpose.
It is an inclusive course designed for makers working in any media, and suitable for all. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, Colour at Play gives you new ways to work with colour; new ways to appreciate its nuances; and new ways to see (and celebrate) the colours that surround you in daily life.

Colour at Play is a course in seven sections.
It builds your confidence for playing with colour as you go, and is designed to help you cultivate your appreciation for the colours of daily life. There are no colour wheels or colour theory here; rather, this course is about developing confidence with colour through the transformative power of play. I'll be leading you on this journey, where I'm happy to serve as your enthusiastic colour-appreciator and enabler of daily colour play.
The course provides structure
As you progress through the seven sections of the course, you'll find different things to try out, each of which will give you new kinds of colour experiences. In the course environment, you can see your progress as you go.
The course helps you record your colour journey
You can use a Bullet Journal, a notepad, a photo-album or any other means to record your colour journey on this course. However, each section also comes with printable worksheets that enable you to easily record your experiences. Print and fill them out to build a little portfolio of your experiences here.
Colour at Play is quick and easy, and you don't need fancy stuff!
- Most of the videos in this course are around five minutes long.
- The creative exercises are designed to fit easily into ordinary life.
- This is not a knitting course (though there is one optional swatching task).
You don't need any special equipment for this course - the whole premise for Colour at Play is that the ideas can be easily practiced every day, in and around (and as part of) the busy stuff of life. Don't wait for a three day colour contemplation retreat to learn more about colour. Instead, join me and discover how you can sneak colour contemplation into everyday moments like making the lunch, taking a ten minute break from your desk, or going for a walk in your local neighbourhood.
Materials List
Essentials
- Basic set of 10 - 12 coloured pencils.
- A good sharpener.
- Bullet Journal, notepad, photo-album or folder (binder) in which to build your record of this course.
- An everyday inspiration source: favourite fabric prints, preferred biscuit tin, packet of tea with colours you think look great etc.
Things to start gathering to use during the course
- Tester strips (paint chips) from the paint shop (you can normally get these for free).
- Clean dry egg-shells (rinse and dry out in a warm place; stack carefully).
- Used postage stamps printed with colours you like.
- Scraps of paper (wrapping paper, envelopes and fliers etc.) for your colour stash.
Optional extras you may want to buy
- Shade-cards from the yarn shop.
- Knitting supplies: oddments of fingering-weight yarn in a range of colours and appropriately-sized needles (2.5 - 3.25mm)
- Makeup, accessories and machine dye (for Wearing Colours Everyday)

Your Instructor
Felix has been a practising artist for over twenty years and is an enabling, inspiring instructor. She has a PhD in soundart, several self-published creative books under her belt, and a long catalogue of commissioned works including projects delivered for Clore learning at TATE Modern; The Charles Dickens Museum; and Sonic Arts Network (now known as Sound & Music).
Felix is currently transitioning away from hand-knitting due to disability and injury, and is learning to find joy in other media - especially through the creative journaling she has pioneered here through her iconic KNITSONIK Bullet Journaling course and the supportive and creative Journal with me membership she runs.
Felix loves how creative play can deepen our appreciation for daily life, and bring us home to ourselves. In her classes you will smile, you will play, you will be warmly invited to experiment and find new layers of joy. Her approach is anti-perfectionist, inclusive and her classes are friendly and relaxed. Collage with me is an offshoot of her Journal with me membership.
